Coach Bobby Holmes was a remarkable football coach at Pascagoula, Biloxi, Laurel, Perkinston Junior College and Moss Point. Bobby hails from Tallassee, Alabama, and was part of a high school football team that put together a 56-game unbeaten streak of 55 victories and one tie in the mid-1940s. He arrived at Perkinston Junior College (now Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College) in 1947 and played football, basketball, and baseball until 1949. Bobby was the football team co-captain and second team All-State at quarterback in 1948. In 1948, he was captain of the state and co-national championship squad and was named first team All-State and All-American JUCO. Coach Holmes was an All-Gulf States Conference quarterback at Southern Miss in 1949 and 1950 smashing school records for most TD passes in a game (four) and career passing (58 percent). He returned punts for TDs of 82 and 95 yards against Alabama in his junior year. Following college, Bobby served in the U. S. Army and received his master’s degree.
