A Florence native, Coach Robert Berry compiled one of the most ipressive high school coaching records in state history. A teacher and coach in Florence, Skene and Jackson for 43 years, Berry's teams won 17 state baseball titles, 11 American Legion nd 6 high school state championships. His lifetime record was 436-189 in baseball, 77-33 in football and 165-44 in basketball. Berry's career began in the 1920s at Florence High School, where he coached basketball and baseball. He led his 1927 basketball team to a third place win at that year's national high school invitational tournament in Chicago. Berry left Central in the late 1960s to join the teaching and coaching staff of Wingfield High School, where he worked until his retirment in 1973. A graduate of Florence High School, Berry received his master's degree in science from Mississippi College. Coach Berry passed away on May 16, 1989.
