Coach Orsmond Jordan was a legendary state and national championship boys basketball coach at Murrah High in Jackson. Coach Jordan was born in Decatur in 1934 and graduated as valedictorian from Wesley Chapel High in Carthage in 1951. He earned 3 letters in basketball and scored 1,124 points at Alcorn State from 1951-1955. He launched his 33-year coaching career in 1956 at East Flora High. During his career, he coached boys basketball, baseball, football, and tennis. He coached at Lanier from 1962-66 and at Brinkley High from 1967-69. He arrived at Murrah High in 1970 where he would establish a boys basketball dynasty during his tenure. Orsmond led the Mustangs boys team to four state championships in 1970, 1986, 1991, and 1992 and one national championship in 1964. His teams compiled a record of 588-193. Under Coach Jordan, Murrah had fourteen 20 plus win seasons, four seasons of 30 plus wins, and one 40 win campaign. He coached 7 prep All-Americans, 8 future NBA stars, and 3 McDonald’s All-Stars. He was named Coach of the Year four times by the Jackson Clarion Ledger and twice by the MAC. He received the Nine Iron Golf Club Sportsmanship Award in 1986, the Babe McCarthy Memorial Award in 1980, and was recognized by the Mississippi legislature in 1986. A member of the Alcorn State Sports Hall of Fame and the Alcorn State Alumni Association Hall of Fame, he was inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
