Coach M. D. Deer was an outstanding basketball coach who coached at Topeka-Tilton, Pinola, and Mendenhall. He was born in Pinola and graduated from Pinola High School in 1953. Coach Deer earned a B. S. degree from Mississippi College in 1962. He served in the U. S. Army from 1954-1956. His coaching career began in 1962 at Topeka-Tilton where his basketball tearms won state tournament titles in 1965, 1966, 1968, 1970 and a state runner-up in 1967. After coaching one year at Pinola, he continued his coaching career at Mendenhall from 1971-1995 where he earned four state championship titles and eight south state championships. He coached the South All-Stars in the 1970 All-Star basketball game, and served as the girls' coach in the 1994 Mississippi/Alabama All-Star game. M.
