Championship football Coach Johnny Fulce, a 30-year coaching veteran, guided football programs at Sturgis, Holmes Community College, and Ackerman. Born in Choctaw County, Johnny graduated from Ackerman High and Mississippi State before starting his 30-year career in 1962 at Sturgis. Serving as head football coach and athletic director for 20 years, he led Sturgis to five Big Black Conference Championships (1962, 1967, 1969, 1973, & 1981) and the 1981 Class B State Championship. He led four teams to undefeated seasons in 1967 (11-0), 1969 (11-0), 1974 (11-0), and 1981 (14-0). Coach Fulce entered the junior college ranks in 1982 when he accepted the head coaching position at Holmes Community College in Goodman where he coached for 4 seasons. Johnny returned to the high school ranks in 1986 when he arrived at his high school alma mater at Ackerman as head football coach and athletic director. and completed his career in 1992. Overall, he led his football teams in 328 contests, winning 222 games, losing 99, with 7 ties. Coach Fulce was a two-time Mississippi Football Coach of the Year honoree in 1975 and 1982. He was a five-time Big Black Conference Coach of the Year. Johnny was an assistant coach in the 1971 Bernard Blackwell Mississippi High School All Star football game and was the head coach of the Class 1A/2A/3A team in the same game in 1991. An All-Star teacher and a community staple, Coach Fulce worked with the Ackerman Booster Club and was the Charter President of the Ackerman Lions Club in 1990.
