Renowned championship high school and college basketball coach at Madison Ridgeland, Warren Central, Mississippi State, Grace Christian Academy, & Starkville Academy. Coach Henderson is a native of Dowdville in Neshoba County who was a star basketball player and a member of the famed 1958 Provine Rams City, County, and Overall Big 8 championship team. He attended Mississippi State from 1958 to 1961 and graduated from Mississippi College in 1963. Jerry played 2 seasons of semi-pro basketball with Payton Buildinger. He started his 47-year coaching career in 1965 at Madison Ridgeland High where he coached boys & girls basketball and guided his girls hoops squads to a record of 473-111 with 5 state runner-up finishes and the 1983 state championship. He arrived at Warren Central in 1983 where he led the Lady Vikings to a record of 170-37 with one state runner-up finish and 3 state championships in 1986, 1987, & 1989. Jerry was selected as head coach for the Mississippi State women’s basketball program in 1989. Under his guidance, the Lady Bulldogs had a mark of 62-101 until 1995 and recorded their first back-to-back winning seasons in school history in 1991 & 1992. Coach Henderson coached 4 All-SEC players and 10 players on the All-SEC Academic teams including Tammy Newlon, the 1994 SEC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year. Jerry completed his coaching career at Grace Christian Academy in Louisville and Starkville Academy from 1996 to 2011. He was selected as coach of the year 7 times by the Capital Athletic Conference and 3 times by the North Little Dixie Conference. He was named Coach of the Year by the Metro Sports Club, Madison County and the Clarion Ledger Jackson Daily News in 198. Jerry received state coach of the year honors in 1986, 1987, & 1989 and was nominated as National Coach of the Year from Region 5 in 1990. Coach Henderson was chosen as MAC girls basketball coach of the year in 1983 & 1986 and served as South All Star Coach in 1969. His teams had 20 or more wins 20 times, 25 or more wins on 15 occasions, and 30 or more wins in 11 seasons. His high school teams claimed 90 tournament championships and from 1974 to 1989 were annually ranked in the top 10 in the state. He led Warren Central to 3 state track titles with 4 runner-up finishe. His boys teams had a record of 253-193 in 16 seasons with a state runner-up finish in 1979 and his girls teams racked up 643 wins and only 148 losses along with 4 state runner-ups (1971, 1976, 1980, 1988) and 4 state championships (1983, 1986, 1987, 1989). Overall, his basketball teams racked up 896 wins and 351 losses for a 72% winning mark. He served on numerous MAC committees including the MAC Board of Directors and Chairman of Basketball Affairs.
