Championship basketball Coach James “Dump” Brock led a highly successful hoops program at Forest Hill in Jackson. A native of Utica, Coach Brock was introduced to the sport of basketball at Utica High. Nicknamed “Dump,” Coach Brock graduated from Mississippi State before starting his coaching career. Coach Brock arrived at Forest Hill in 1951 and would coach the Rebels basketball teams for the next 26 seasons. He coached both boys’ and girls’ squads and his girls teams compiled a record of 47-12 in two seasons from 1951 to 1953. Coach Brock’s Forest Hill boys’ teams dominated the Little Dixie Conference capturing 14 titles during his tenure. He guided Forest Hill to three state championships in 1954 (Class AA-A), 1957 (Class AA-A), and 1967 (Class AA). Overall, Coach Brock’s Forest Hill’s hoops squads had a record of 633 wins and 158 losses. He was a coach in the 1957 Mississippi High School All-Star basketball game. In addition to his coaching duties, Coach Brock was an outstanding science teacher noted for his high academic standards. Coach Brock passed away on September 9, 2019.
