For 33 years, Coach Herman Robinson guided boys’ basketball programs at House High in Philadelphia, Greenwood, Waynesboro, Laurel, Harrison Central, St. Martin, East Central Community College, and New Hope. Born in Chunky, Coach Robinson graduated from Hickory High and Mississippi College. He served two years in the U.S. Army before he began coaching in 1955. Herman spent his entire career as head basketball coach and never served as an assistant. His first coaching job was at House High in Philadelphia and he would coach there for two seasons before moving to Greenwood High for two years and then a year at Waynesboro. Coach Robinson’s first taste of success happened at Laurel where he led his team to a District title in 1962. He moved to the Coast to Harrison Central where he spent 6 seasons with the Red Rebels, leading them to a 1965 district crown. Herman moved to St. Martin where his team claimed a 1972 district championship. He spent 7 years at St. Martin then 6 years at East Central Community College at Decatur before finishing his career at New Hope for the final 6 years of coaching. Coach Robinson’s basketball teams racked up 717 wins with only 263 losses for a 73% winning mark out of 980 games coached. He was athletic director at St. Martin and Harrison Central for a combined 8 years and also served as assistant principal at New Hope. The accomplishments on the court led to Coach Robinson being honored as coach of the year by the Pascagoula River Conference on five occasions and one coach of the year award from the Mid-Mississippi Conference.
