Carl Walters, SR was a renowned sportswriter who is the first non-coach to be selected into the MAC Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class of 1973. Carl was born in Laurel and wrote for the Meridian Star from 1924 to 1945 before moving to the Tupelo Daily Journal from 1945 to 1948. He arrived in Jackson in 1948 where he wrote for the Jackson Daily News (1948-55), State Times (1955-56), and the Clarion Ledger (1956-1977). He was a longtime member of the Football Writers Association of America. He served on the Heisman Trophy Award Committee as the Mississippi representative for 24 years and was the Mississippi representative for the AP All American Board on 7 occasions. Carl was a five-time Mississippi Outstanding Sportswriter. He was a Charter Member of the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association and received a Big Eight Writers Appreciation Award for 40 years of outstanding service. He was a member of the founding committee with the Jackson Touchdown Club for the creation of the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame.
