Coach Bob Tyler was a legendary football coach who has excelled on the high school, junior college, senior college, and small college levels. He is a native of Water Valley where he still resides. Bob was a multi-sport athlete at Water Valley before entering military service as an MP. He achieved his college degrees at Ole Miss following his term of duty at Ft. Bragg, NC. Coach Tyler began coaching in 1955 at Water Valley High and has coached football at Okolona, Senatobia, and Meridian. Boby led the Meridian Wildcats to Big Eight Championships in 1967 & 1968. His high school teams played in 119 games and achieved a record of 94-19-6. He served on Johnny Vaught’s Ole Miss Rebel staff from 1967 to 1970 as receivers coach and worked as an assistant under Bear Bryant at Alabama before moving to Mississippi State as offensive coordinator. He was named head coach of the Bulldogs in 1973 and led State to the 1974 Sun Bowl victory over North Carolina. He coached in the 1975 Blue-Gray Classic and the East-West Shrine college all-star games. Coach Tyler guided the Bulldogs from 1973-1978. He served as head coach and athletic director at North Texas State for one season and coached at Northwest CC and Oxford High in the mid 1980’s. He was named Director of Mississippi Parks, Wildlife, and Fisheries and served in that capacity from 1992-96. He was Head coach of the Millsaps Majors for two years until his retirement. He was the recipient of numerous Coach of the Year awards on the high school and college ranks.
