Famed championship basketball coach at Winona, Coach Billy Wells hails from Grenada where he graduated from Grenada High in 1951. He earned college degrees at Delta State in 1958, 1970, & 1971. Coach Wells served in the US Army from 1954-56 and began his 28-year basketball coaching career at Drew High in 1958 before serving 2 years at McEachern Junior High in Powder Springs, GA. Billy arrived at Winona High in 1968 where he would lead the Tiger basketball program for 22 seasons. He led the Tigers hoops teams to the 1975 Class 3A state title and 3 state runner-up finishes in 1972, 1976, and 1987. Coach Wells guided Winona to 2 North Mississippi crowns, 9 district titles, 7 district runner-up finishes, and 12 championships in the Choctaw (5 titles), and Mid-Mississippi (7 titles) conferences. He coached Winona to fourteen 20-win seasons and four 30-win campaigns. He was named MAC boys basketball coach of the year in 1981.9-time conference coach of the year (4 in Choctaw Conference, 5 in Mid Mississippi Conference). He coached the North squad in the 1975 MS HS All-Star basketball game. His high school basketball teams compiled a record of 548 wins and 178 losses for a sparkling 75% winning mark.
